HFood: Citrus Profile

Grapefruits, lemons and limes are the talk of the town during January aka Detox Month – and with good reason. All of the sour citrus fruits are alkalinizing, which is step #1 in detoxing the body. They are also packed with phytonutrients, and are particularly known for their high vitamin C content. Citrus fruits also make great snacks – grapefruits, oranges and mandarins can be eaten alone or juiced. Others, like lemons and limes, are staple ingredients in dressings, drinks, desserts and various dishes, but are rarely eaten alone due to their tart flavor. They are the “mini me” of trees, and the green cousin of the cauliflower. That’s right, it’s the one and only: Broccoli. Some call broccoli “vegetable royalty”.
